End of Chapter Six: Ties.
Page title taken from Gorillaz' song Demon Days. That's a really neat live version of the song with choirs, but the studio version on the album is lovely as well.
Demon Days was pretty much the soundtrack to my life the summer before I went away to college, so it seems appropriate enough to reference it now.
The colors on this page turned out a bit garish, I readily admit, and in general the page as a whole didn't come together as cohesively as I had envisioned (the traintracks are a bit too crisply rendered and don't feel right but, as with everything ever, I got tired of them and gave up after a while).
I wish I felt more emotional fanfare about sending this page off and thus ending the chapter, but I've been so procrastinate about the last several scenes it almost feels like a houseguest who has overstayed their welcome.
I think overall this has been a pretty good chapter as far as meeting my own expectations went, especially from a narrative standpoint. Artistically I still have a long ways to go, but I'm getting there, step by step.
Next chapter will feature an even more broken narrative. There will be more new characters I'm really excited about as the cast travels to new environments.
I've made a pact with @Oly-RRR that I will begin Chapter Seven no later than her birthday, August 7. :P I'd of course love to come back sooner, that's just my severe procrastinating deadline. I have a lot of stuff I need to research for the coming chapter, and in general the script is just going to be very heavy and the chapter itself very long, page-wise.
I'm excited to be coming up to these storylines. I've been bandying them about for a while and I think they're going to be pretty good fun to work on and to read as well.
I know I started off this chapter pretty well in terms of "finish a scene so I can upload it daily," but that fell apart as things went on. I'll try to be better about sticking to that next time because I think it does make it better for you guys as readers if I can assure you there is literally already a page in the archive waiting to appear tomorrow as opposed to making vague and invariably broken promises about whether Santa is going to come this year.
I also gotta do some site tweaks, but when isn't that the case, really. That home page image has simply GOT to change.
I'm sure I had more I wanted to say, but can't think of it at the moment.
Up next I'll be running fanart I got/gave over the holidays and thereabouts, as promised.
Thanks so much for reading along with me. If you liked chapter six, I think you will definitely enjoy chapter seven, as these are merely the seeds of Drama Bullshit Yet to Come.
Hope to see you all again soon.
ALL GROWN UP AND LEAVING HOME ;A; Their poses turned out so well! I think I try to be like Aggie when travelling but I'm generally more like Eddie - I always keep thinking about what I'm leaving behind instead of enjoying the moment even when it's a 5-7 hours ride to my grandpa and the stakes aren't high at all. XP
I think I'd add more dust, shadows or sunlight to the railway tracks to distort and blur them more so they are more "in the background" but that is becoming my way of dealing with tricky art situations lately and I better watch out before it turns into a bad habit. :P
You know, I just realised that your characters are the few characters that aren't my own that have a sort of constant presence in my head even when I'm not reading their story - like I can see some funny video and think "Huh, Marie would probably like that..." and I don't think that about many characters who aren't my own.
Gosh, I'm going to miss your updates but I know the next few months will fly by fast! :D
And I like Gorillaz and that song (though I'm not very familiar with them and need to catch up, as a teenager I started ignoring any music that was on telly on purpose and missed out on a few actually good bands as a result) but this page also reminded me of this song - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47nKUHnlNy4 :B
I missed my train, didn't I...
@Oly-RRR: Aaah thank you!! I tend to Leon it myself, though it helps to be looking forward to where you're going and/or not having a really crowded car of people all over the place. :P
I agree with your railroad treatment. I may return to this page sometime during the hiatus to tinker with it because it's so much less impactful than I had desired because of that. Ahahaha and I hear you on those art crutches- I've started doing the "add wib-wob lines to clothes to make wrinkles/folds" thing visible on this page and so far I don't think I've overdone it but I can easily see it going wrong in the future!!
Awwww that really touches!! I feel the same way about your cast too, I think Jarvis and Teague specifically have taken up permanent armchairs in my brain :P I don't know why I tend to fixate more on your younger cast than the adults, maybe I identify with them more? I don't know, it's going to take some self-reflection...
It is definitely going to go so, so fast. Lol, I already feel weird not having a "next page to work on," it's been far less triumphant than endings of previous chapters have been. I think I'd feel more comfortable if the next chapter was more, like, charted out already? I mean by the time I finished ch 5 I knew pretty much all of what ch 6 would entail, there was only a few scenes I needed to create from scratch when I sat down to script. But chapter 7 has so many "placeholder" scenes in it right now, or scenes where I only know one small transaction that has to occur but don't have the pie to put it in yet... I think I should like to start scripting more tonight if I can get some schoolwork done. I'm just hoping most of all that next chapter will be less of an uphill battle than this one was in terms of procrastinating between updates. :( :(
@mitchellbravo: Ooh, yeah, those lines work well I think! :D
I'm not sure (I sort of mentally switch from one group to another myself) I think younger cast might be easier to associate with daily life stuff because THEIR lives are all about it when in case of the adults we've mostly seen them in work situations so far. I need to throw in more casual shorts about them in at some point after Piss Business! But anyway, I approve of Jarvis and Teague occupying Wall Streee- imean your brain! :D I have these three post-it notes to list ideas for shorts (Cops, Crazies, Kids) and kids got their post-it note almost full already (though it also includes ideas about Mikey's class).
I know, scripting specific things is intimidating - or more like, when you turn it from an idea in your head into specific lines, it's like everything shrinks. I feel similar about Newton arcs, I mean I have them written but it still needs extra work. But we can do it!! I think it helps even filling the space with the closest you can get to what you want and then maybe in a few days you'll find the perfect lines - even with all its issues scripting is faster than drawing so you have some extra time in case of later pages when it comes to details.
Despite that i think you're a bit right about something being off about the way you did this page--like, maybe the pictures of the guys are too small in relation to the train tracks?--i really enjoy it overall. The concept pulls together so nicely, and you can see all their various hopes and dreams and situations culminating in this moment. Super duper thematic...and feelsy and stuff! :P Hooray for updates, btw!
oh, i enjoyed the colors, though! didn't seem garish at all. The shadow on Leon's suit is ultra swanky.
@Bluezilla: Aww, thank you so much! Yeah there's definitely things I would have done differently (and I am still tempted to darken the background just so it recedes more) but I liked being able to make this kind of a page that's just about different people in comparable but also very dissimilar situations.
And thank you!! Yeah I impressed myself with that shadow, I hope I can manage that more in the future XP I was definitely struggling a lot with value IMO but I'm glad that you found the results pleasing anyway!
My Brother "The_Hankerchief" recommended this to me, and I'm glad he did. A superb story, and Joseph is a character after my own heart. Looking forward to the next part!
@General.Hankins: Thanks a million, General!!! You're just in time, too- I'm partway through coloring the first scene of the next chapter so I will probably have it running by the weekend! Welcome aboard and thanks for reading the whole dang thing and taking the time to comment :D
